For Parents: What’s Happening in Youth Group?

ABC Youth Logo Black Circle cropped.jpg

A few weeks ago, we said goodbye to Pastor Dan and Lenae, as they moved to Idaho.  It was sad to see them go.

ABC Youth has continued to meet, and I have had the privilege of filling in until we find someone else to come on staff as our Youth Pastor.  I was excited for the opportunity because I have known so many of these kids since they were little.  Plus, my own two teenage boys are part of the Youth Group!

Taking on the Youth Group is not an easy/small job and it is not something that I can do on my own because I still have my other areas of ministry that I am involved in.  Luckily, several leaders have stepped forward to help.  So, while the transition has been emotionally difficult because the kids will miss Pastor Dan and Lenae, I am so pleased to say that the programming part of the transition has been nearly seamless, thanks in great part to all of the help!  Thank you ABC for your generosity in serving where needed!

We have had Life Group Sign-Ups over the last three weeks in Youth Group.  It is not too late for the kids to sign up.  Take a look at the Youth Life Group Brochure and email us at if your student would like to sign up!  You will see in this brochure how many great leaders stepped in to lead a Life Group!

Over the last few weeks, we have been going through a series called “Follower.”  Our students have been learning about what it really means to be a follower of Christ.  So far, we have learned that in order to authentically follow Christ we are to LOVE God with all that we are, and LOVE others.  We are also expected to GROW in our relationship with Christ and in our relationships with other believers.  And, we are all called to SERVE.  Jesus is our example, we are to FOLLOW Him.  I would like to give a big “thank you” to Bruce Goss, who has been alternating teaching with me.  He has been such a tremendous help!  This week, Bruce will be teaching the final lesson in this series.

I would like to encourage you to ask your students about what they are learning in Youth Group.  Here are a few questions you could use to get the discussion going:

  1. What do you think it means to LOVE God with all that you are? (check out these verses: Mark 12:30-31)
  2. How can you love your neighbor (friend, classmate, teachers) as yourself? (Mark 12:31)
  3. What are some practical things that you can do to GROW in your faith?
  4. What are some practical things that we can do as a family to grow in our faith?
  5. Do you feel called to SERVE somehow?  If so, how?

I would also like to encourage you to consider serving as a family somehow.  You can serve at the church or elsewhere in the community, but take the time to do it as a family.  You will be blessed (John 13:17).  Read John 13 as a family.   This is a great passage in scripture that shows Jesus leading by example.  Then come up with a serving plan together.  I would love to hear what you come up with!  Email me at

Bible Archaeology – Boys Club

Last night in Boys Club, we started working on our next Dog Tag: Bible Archaeology.  I am so excited about our boys learning and exploring right from their classrooms at ABC Church.

I would like to encourage you to ask your son what he learned about last night!  And if you would ever like to see a copy of the lesson that is taught on Wednesday Evening, feel free to contact me for a copy.  You may surprised at what YOU will learn as well.  I know I was!

Trunk or Treat THANK YOU!

Thank you ABC for another great Trunk or Treat!  Last year was hard to beat, but you went above and beyond!

Thank you to everyone that donated candy, came dressed up, showed up to help, hosted a trunk and brought, set up and ran the photo booth.

I think everyone that came had a great time, which is what it is all about.

In case you were curious, here are our Trunk Decoration Winners this year:

3rd Place:  Jill Mathias – Peanuts Theme

Check out Snoopy on the top of Jill’s car!

2nd Place: Martinez Family – Lilo and Stitch Theme

Lilo and Stitch are missing from this picture.  They were likely collecting candy and/or bouncy in the bouncy houses.  Believe me when I tell you that they were ADORABLE.

1st Place: Thompson and Rasmussen Families – Wizard of Oz Theme

Complete with the entire lineup of characters, a witch under a house, a yellow-brick road, a tornado, and THE Wizard of Oz!!!

So much fun!  Can’t wait to see what you all do next year : )

Captain Courage

We have just passed the halfway point in our “Heroes of Mega City” Series.  So far the kids have learned several character traits of heroes, including dependability, generosity, and endurance.

This week we will be talking about courage.  The Main Point of the lesson is: Heroes Stand Up for What is Right!

We will explore a few stories, but the first Bible Story will pick up in Daniel Chapter 3 where King Nebudchadnezzar is forcing everyone in his kingdom to bow to a statue that he made.  If someone refused to bow, they would be burned into a furnace and killed!  Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego refused to bow because they knew it was wrong!

Take a few minutes with your child sometime before Sunday and talk with him/her about a time when you had to have the courage to do what was right, even though it was hard.

Here is a link to one of my favorite illustrations of this Bible Story.  I would love it if you watched it as a family!  The video is about 30 minutes long, but it is really cute.  It will create a good opportunity to talk about courage with your child.

Current Pictures

With our New Check-In System, we have been working to get current information, pictures, and birthdays entered into our system.  You can help us!  Please send us an individual picture of each of your children.

Here are the guidelines:

  • Nothing fancy (it doesn’t have to be a professional picture)
  • Clear (I would mainly like to be able to clearly see your child’s features)
  • No Silly Faces (Please understand that I KNOW how difficult this is.  I literally do not have a single picture of any of my kids with just a regular smile from the past 6 months!)

They get this from their father.

  • Please send each child’s date of birth with their picture.

  1. There are currently around 200 kids that attend ABC, if we have their picture we are less likely to mix them up with another child.  Their picture will go into the database and that’s it.
  2. We like to send Birthday Cards to the kids on their birthday.

You can send your pictures to

Thank you for your help!

Back to the Routine

Why is it that every summer I think it will be relaxing and less crazy and that I will have some time to catch up, but then without fail EVERY summer is more insane than the entire school year!?  It’s honestly like I develop amnesia every year in May.  Someone please just tell me in advance that next summer is going to be stupid-busy, like the kind of busy that you need a nap when you think about it – kind of busy.  OK?

So, yes.  It was busy.  That is why I haven’t been keeping you updated.  I am grateful for my routine.  In this moment, I love my routine so much that I wish I could kiss it!  Kids are back in school (yes!), Wednesday Night Activities have started back up, the Nursery/Preschool/Student Chapel renovation is complete, and I have already made my hair appointment 2 months in advance (just more evidence of how much I love my routine and how desperately I just want to be ready and prepared – yes, even when the gray starts to show again!)

Before I give updates on all that is coming up in Kids Ministries, let me just show you what we did this summer:

I am so proud of this renovation.  I cannot begin to tell you the amount of hours, blood, sweat and tears that went into this.  I am forever grateful to those of you that poured your energy and love into making it beautiful perfect.Thank you ABC!  This nursery says: “We love your kids, we care about EVERY detail, and we want you to feel at home here.”

With the renovation came our new Automated Check-In System.  I am excited about this addition because it helps to increase our security.  We are still learning the new system, but each week it gets a bit faster.  Thank you for your patience!

In addition to the renovation, Kid’s Ministries had a packed summer schedule with trips to the zoo, an epic Water Gun Fight and Welcome Back Party with a bouncy house!

And now we are back to the routine.

For today, I will update on what is happening in Kid’s Church.  Keep checking back for updates in other areas of ABC Kids Ministries.

We started a new series in Kid’s Church on  Sunday called “Heroes of Mega City.”

This will be a great series.  They will be learning valuable lessons from stories in the bible, if you would like to get a glimpse click Here.  And NEXT Sunday they can come to church dressed as their favorite Super Hero!  If your child comes to church dressed in their costume, please take a picture and email it to me.  I would love to put some pictures together throughout this series.

Here is a picture of me as my favorite Super Hero.

I was feeling pretty awesome in this picture.  Kind of like I do now that I am back to the routine!
