Captain Courage

We have just passed the halfway point in our “Heroes of Mega City” Series.  So far the kids have learned several character traits of heroes, including dependability, generosity, and endurance.

This week we will be talking about courage.  The Main Point of the lesson is: Heroes Stand Up for What is Right!

We will explore a few stories, but the first Bible Story will pick up in Daniel Chapter 3 where King Nebudchadnezzar is forcing everyone in his kingdom to bow to a statue that he made.  If someone refused to bow, they would be burned into a furnace and killed!  Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego refused to bow because they knew it was wrong!

Take a few minutes with your child sometime before Sunday and talk with him/her about a time when you had to have the courage to do what was right, even though it was hard.

Here is a link to one of my favorite illustrations of this Bible Story.  I would love it if you watched it as a family!  The video is about 30 minutes long, but it is really cute.  It will create a good opportunity to talk about courage with your child.

Current Pictures

With our New Check-In System, we have been working to get current information, pictures, and birthdays entered into our system.  You can help us!  Please send us an individual picture of each of your children.

Here are the guidelines:

  • Nothing fancy (it doesn’t have to be a professional picture)
  • Clear (I would mainly like to be able to clearly see your child’s features)
  • No Silly Faces (Please understand that I KNOW how difficult this is.  I literally do not have a single picture of any of my kids with just a regular smile from the past 6 months!)

They get this from their father.

  • Please send each child’s date of birth with their picture.

  1. There are currently around 200 kids that attend ABC, if we have their picture we are less likely to mix them up with another child.  Their picture will go into the database and that’s it.
  2. We like to send Birthday Cards to the kids on their birthday.

You can send your pictures to

Thank you for your help!

Back to the Routine

Why is it that every summer I think it will be relaxing and less crazy and that I will have some time to catch up, but then without fail EVERY summer is more insane than the entire school year!?  It’s honestly like I develop amnesia every year in May.  Someone please just tell me in advance that next summer is going to be stupid-busy, like the kind of busy that you need a nap when you think about it – kind of busy.  OK?

So, yes.  It was busy.  That is why I haven’t been keeping you updated.  I am grateful for my routine.  In this moment, I love my routine so much that I wish I could kiss it!  Kids are back in school (yes!), Wednesday Night Activities have started back up, the Nursery/Preschool/Student Chapel renovation is complete, and I have already made my hair appointment 2 months in advance (just more evidence of how much I love my routine and how desperately I just want to be ready and prepared – yes, even when the gray starts to show again!)

Before I give updates on all that is coming up in Kids Ministries, let me just show you what we did this summer:

I am so proud of this renovation.  I cannot begin to tell you the amount of hours, blood, sweat and tears that went into this.  I am forever grateful to those of you that poured your energy and love into making it beautiful perfect.Thank you ABC!  This nursery says: “We love your kids, we care about EVERY detail, and we want you to feel at home here.”

With the renovation came our new Automated Check-In System.  I am excited about this addition because it helps to increase our security.  We are still learning the new system, but each week it gets a bit faster.  Thank you for your patience!

In addition to the renovation, Kid’s Ministries had a packed summer schedule with trips to the zoo, an epic Water Gun Fight and Welcome Back Party with a bouncy house!

And now we are back to the routine.

For today, I will update on what is happening in Kid’s Church.  Keep checking back for updates in other areas of ABC Kids Ministries.

We started a new series in Kid’s Church on  Sunday called “Heroes of Mega City.”

This will be a great series.  They will be learning valuable lessons from stories in the bible, if you would like to get a glimpse click Here.  And NEXT Sunday they can come to church dressed as their favorite Super Hero!  If your child comes to church dressed in their costume, please take a picture and email it to me.  I would love to put some pictures together throughout this series.

Here is a picture of me as my favorite Super Hero.

I was feeling pretty awesome in this picture.  Kind of like I do now that I am back to the routine!

Superhero Slide

Missionary Superhero Training

Ask your kids about Missionary Superhero Training.  I would love to hear what they say!

Superhero Slide

On Sunday, during service and during the Missions Banquet, our kids entered into  Missionary Superhero Training.  The Children’s Ministry Team was VERY excited to re-introduce missions to the kids in a fun and exciting way.  See, at Austin Bluffs Church, we believe that Missionaries are the closest thing you can find to a real-life Superhero!!  We want our kids to know that.

Our training entailed stations that helped teach the kids about Giving toward missions,  Praying for Missionaries and for those that still need to hear the Good News, and Going on a mission trip or helping someone to go.

Each child also put their picture into their own passport.  In the future, on the months where we have a fifth Sunday, we will train again, this time visiting different places.  Each place we visit, we will stamp each child’s passport with that country’s stamp!  In May, we will visit the Philippines.  I am very excited to tell all the kids about my trip there and all that I saw.

IMG_1804 When you drop of your kids in Children’s Church on Sunday, be sure to stop by our Missionary Superhero Training Bulletin Board.   There are some great pictures of our Training from the last couple of weeks.

Confession Card

Our Prayer Challenge continues in Kid’s Church.  On Sunday, we talked about Confession and sent home a card with the children.  Take some time to talk to them about Confession during prayer.  It is good for us as adults to share with our kids that often we need to confess.  They need to know that we mess up too.  Share with your kids something that you have confessed of recently.  Then, help your child fill out his or her Confession Card and bring it in to be posted on our bulletin board (only if they are comfortable with sharing.)

1 John 1:9 (NIV) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

So far we only have a couple of precious prayers posted on our bulletin board, I would love to see it fill up.  Make it a point to stop by so you can see them and pray over them as well.  What a great way to teach our children about how we function as The Body of Christ!

Praise Card

On Sunday, we introduced the ABC Kids Prayer Challenge.  The purpose of this challenge is to teach the kids to pray.  Each week we will introduce an important principal of prayer.  This week, we started with Praise.

Each child was sent home with a Praise card (similar to the one pictured above.)  We would love for the children to write their prayers of praise on these cards.  If they are comfortable with others seeing their prayers, they can bring them back to church and we will post them on our bulletin board.  This way, we can all join in prayer together.

Encourage your kids to praise God.  Pray as a family and come up with different ways to Praise him together!  We have extra Praise Cards, so if you would like to add your praises, we would love to post yours as well!  You can pick up extras when you drop off your children in Kid’s Church on Sunday.

I am very excited for this challenge.  I feel it is crucial to our kid’s spiritual growth.  Can’t wait to see their sweet prayers.
